1st November 2024

As we enter the last month of the season bringing harvested fields and golden leaves, we’re in store for some exciting new openings. From a sought-after pop-up getting keys to its own door to innovative twists on old favourites, here we have four of the youngest restaurants in London to try in the coming weeks.

Bottarga, Chelsea

Abundance and generosity are what Mother Earth, the translation of Pachamama in Latin is associated with. Perhaps that’s why then, the frivolous and flavourful Peruvian restaurant group of its name – which celebrated ten-years in the running in October – keeps on giving. Well, maybe it’s also to do with the enterprising society we live in, but it suits us because its latest restaurant has a lot to offer, with produce from the land, sea, and the chef’s Greek father (in the form of freshly made olive oil) arriving straight from the Aegean islands into a flickering flamed, eclectically designed London restaurant.

Bottarga, positions itself as the “younger, more casual sibling of Zephyr”, which has breezed Notting Hill with its salty, charred sea bass and elegant, green-stemmed coupe glasses since 2022. Officially opening doors on the 6th of November in Kings Road territory, its little sister dishes up some similar Greek-style plates – think fluffy flatbread and sweet-toned crackers dipped in moreish smoked aubergine and tzaziki classics, Txuleta-sourced ribeyes on-the-bone and a smashing lamb belly.

The new site also features exclusive offerings like the refreshing yet filling Bottarga Orzo pasta and burnt potatoes – confited in clarified butter, then topped with even more brown butter, and finally served with a robust garlic aioli on the side – which may sound hefty but we’re safe in the knowledge it’s a healthy dose of Mediterranean cooking.

Silva, Mayfair

Restaurant Opening London Autumn - Garden Room
Silva's Garden Room for secluded private dining

While we’re on the Latin nature theme, soon-to-be Mayfair restaurant Silva’s name has its roots in a forest, and is already stirring up quite the buzz, which is no mean feat in this crowded neck of the woods. First-time restauranteur Daria Grebenyuk has sown the restaurant’s seeds with modernity in mind, and in keeping with our present globalised days, the whimsical plates are inspired from across the world, whether it be the Mediterranean or Japan.

Silva will offer an all-day menu, from fruity breakfasts and benedicts to fine evening dining

Across a two-floor space, the calming presence of a woodland will be felt throughout, with muted tones and pine green accents, as well as an elegant, convivial feel as banquettes snake through the light and airy interior.

Dining here is set to be an all-day into the night affair, so the time of day you visit might depend on whether you order the gratinated crab and Gruyère omelette, potato waffle topped with beef tartare and gently shaved winter truffle or the roast duck with coco beans, fennel and orange.

Bookings for Silva will be available for after the 21st of November

Sachi, Belgravia

A meticulously crafted sushi platter at Sachi, Belgravia

Brutal as it may sound, in the top end of gastronomy there’s no place for those keeping their heads afloat with the same old habits and tricks. For a culinary experience to shine, reflection, innovation and a sprinkling of thinking on your feet are integral ingredients. So when we hear of restaurants reinvigorating themselves, we’re naturally excited. Particularly when they were delightfully good in the first place. Once bridging Nordic and Japanese cuisine in a polished basement, Sachi is now entering a new chapter by taking hold of the second and skyline-viewing top floor of the former Pantechnicon at 19 Motcomb Street.

Wagyu Beef Karaage

Officially opening on the 6th of November, the main restaurant will offer an omakase experience over a statement open kitchen where guests can marvel at the Japanese cutting and cooking craftmanship, while faultlessly presented robata, tempura, sushi and sashimi, in all colours of the rainbow, arrive. Dishes focus on seasonal, local produce and foraged flora, alongside rare-breed meats and line-caught fish, and will include a Wagyu Beef Karaage through to an Aubergine Miso Yaki and a Chilian Seabass Kushiyaki.

You’ll also want to ascend to the atmospheric, Kyoto garden-themed rooftop bar to sip sake, listen to live music and even request a recommendation from their very own Cigar Sommelier in a specialised smoking room.

AngloThai, Marlyebone

Restaurant Openings London Autumn - AngloThai crab

When one door closes, another opens, and from the 11th of November, Seymour Place, once the quarters of The Gate, will be home to new AngloThai restaurant from husband and wife team John (London’s Som Saa, Bangkok’s Nahm) and Desiree Chantarasak. In a nod to John’s heritage, AngloThai will see the marrying of British and Thai cuisine, as well as offering a stellar European wine list, meticulously curated by Desiree to champion thoughtful producers and energetic bottles.

Restaurant Openings London Autumn - AngloThai oyster
Carlingford oysters with sea buckthorn and fermented chilli

Following several sell-out residency stints, this is the pair’s first restaurant, who, teaming up with well-seasoned MJMK Restaurants (Casa do Frango, KOL, Fonda), we think will be just fine. We can expect innovative dishes and cooking techniques (charcoal grilling, coconut smoking or achieving wok-hei ‘breath of the wok’), with a focus on local British produce and bold Thai flavours. You’ll be able to snack on red flesh plum, candied beetroot & suffolk rapeseed to start with, before leading on to the likes of monkfish jungle curry & holy basil or lion’s mane mushroom & sunflower seed satay – all bursting of imagination and flavour.
